Menta: I began to realize that my commission income was going to come to a screeching halt
It’s the dreaded six-letter word that every person in North America fears to hear from his or her doctor…Cancer.
In 2011, Debbie Menta, Associate Broker at EXIT Realty Homeward Bound, was given the devastating news that she had multiple myelomas as a result of stage four bone Cancer, and the prognosis was bleak.
The initial impact created a shockwave of questions, “The thought of not enjoying my grandchildren, not growing old with my husband and being unable to live a normal life was overwhelming. Then there was work; deals that were in the pipeline, listings and current clients. How were all of these things going to get taken care of?“ an emotional Debbie recalled. “I began to realize that my commission income was going to come to a screeching halt and I was worried about how my husband and I would make ends meet.“
Debbie knew that, thanks to innovative treatments, thousands of people beat Cancer every year. But, as a real estate professional, she also knew that being out of business for so long was tantamount to career death. This was one of the major reasons why she chose to join EXIT Realty.
“Suddenly I went from being able to work, to fighting for my life, without the ability to generate an income. Despite all of my worries I had the comfort of knowing I worked for a company that provided residual income.“
